What is Dolby Atmos?
Dolby Atmos is an immersive audio format that goes beyond traditional stereo and 5.1 surround. Instead of locking sounds to fixed channels, Atmos lets us place audio elements as “objects” in a three dimensional space. That means dialogue, music and effects can move around, above and behind the listener with pinpoint accuracy.
For you, that means:
- 3D space – including above the listener.
- You can position sound anywhere in a 360° sphere.
- This creates a much more lifelike and cinematic experience.
Dialogue, music, and effects feel more natural and enveloping, rather than confined to speakers.
Creative Freedom and Precision
- You’re not limited to fixed speaker positions; you can move sounds dynamically through space.
- Perfect for creative storytelling: e.g., rain falling from above, voices circling around, or instruments floating around a mix.
Future-Proof and Scalable
- A Dolby Atmos mix automatically adapts to the listener’s setup — from cinema systems to soundbars to headphones.
- You mix once and deliver for all playback formats, saving time and ensuring consistency.
- Compatible with all major streaming platforms (Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Amazon).
Greater Audience Impact
- Listeners report higher emotional engagement and spatial awareness in Atmos content.
- For film and series work, it enhances the sense of realism and presence.
- For music, it brings a new dimension of depth and space that feels intimate and immersive.
Whether your audience is in a theatre, at home or on mobile, a well-crafted Atmos mix makes the story more immersive and more memorable.

A typical Dolby Atmos workflow
Every project is different, but most Atmos sessions follow a similar path.
- Pre-production and planning
We start by reviewing your script, offline edits, temp mixes and delivery specs. Together, we agree on what Atmos should achieve for your project, where we want the most impact, and how best to structure the session. - Asset preparation
You deliver Pro Tools sessions or stems, along with pictures, EDLs, and any relevant notes. Our team preps sessions for immersive work, cleaning dialogue, organising effects and music tracks, and setting up object and bed routing. - Mixing in Atmos
In the Arnason studio, we build the immersive soundstage: -
- Placing key sound elements as objects in the space
- Balancing dialogue, music and effects for clarity
- Sculpting movement and height to support the story
- Checking translation to home environments, soundbars and headphones
Producers and directors can attend in person, join via remote review, or hand the mix over entirely.
- Review and refinements
We run review passes with your team, address notes and make creative refinements. Picture changes and alternate versions can be turned around efficiently thanks to our workflow and session design. - Deliverables and delivery
We create Dolby Atmos masters alongside 5.1 and stereo fold-downs, plus any stems or split tracks required for international, versioning, or archive use. Masters are delivered according to your broadcaster or platform specs.
